General
  1. School Famine is an experiential event co-organised by students/ teachers and World Vision at school for participants to experience hunger. The level of school participation varies for different types of famine activities. World Vision can provide a range of support including Vision Talks, educational resources and activity guidelines. Please contact us for more details.
  2. School Famine can be held on any date during the school year. Please check your school calendar to avoid clashes with any other school events.


Preparation
  1. We recommend that you send us enrolment form (kindergarten/primary/youth) before the event. Once registered, you may enjoy the resources listed below:
  2. Yes, all Vision Talks and educational resources are free of charge, but schools will need to cover the material delivery cost.
  3. You should fill out the enrolment form (kindergarten／primary／youth) and fax it to 2394 0566 or email to edu@worldvision.org.hk at least 2 weeks in advance. World Vision will contact you via fax or email for further arrangements after receiving your application. The number of talks per month is limited and will be allocated on a first come, first served basis.
  4. World Vision will try to contact you via fax or email within 3 working days upon receiving your enrolment form. Please call us at 2399 8606 if you do not hear from us after a week.
  5. No, it depends on our availability on that day. World Vision will call you first to agree on a date and time, and then fax or email you an initial reply. You must then reply by fax or email to confirm the booking.
  6. In general, schools will have to pick up the resources at World Vision office.

  8. Contact us to get your Famine Kit which includes sample schedule, simulation ideas and all the information you need to plan a famine.
  9. Be creative! Choose a promotion that suits your schoolmates. E.g. a promotional broadcast during recess time; a short play during morning assembly; or use our posters.
  10. Our resources include exhibition boards, videos, etc. For details, please visit the educational resources page. For borrowing workshop materials such as bamboo sticks and water pipes, please contact us.

  11. Yes, fill out the enrolment form (kindergarten／primary／youth) and we will send you the workshop guidelines.

  12. Apart from World Vision events, normally we do not invite celebrities or other guests on behalf of other groups. Schools should therefore make their own arrangements in this regard.
  13. We recommend that you use the School Famine posters provided by World Vision, but you are also welcome to design your own promotional material. Please note that if you wish to use World Vision's name or logo in your design, you must submit the draft to us for approval, at least 7 working days prior to official production for review and feedback.
  14. For students aged 18 or below, parental consent should be obtained before taking part in the famine event. Please refer to Parental Consent Form Sample and issue the form along with the parents’ letter.


Fundraising
  1. World Vision sets out the use of funds for School Famine each year. To find out more about this year’s use of funds, please refer to Fundraising.
  2. No, it would be your own decision. We believe that having a realistic fundraising target for your School Famine can help engage students in the event. For further details, please see Fundraising Activity Guidelines.

  5. Please indicate your request for sponsorship form in your enrolment form and we will then email it to you. Please use it carefully for the stated purpose and do not circulate the soft copy to avoid unauthorised fundraising. Only hard copies should be distributed to participants; each form must be stamped by your school or student committee with a unique sequential number assigned for legitimate certification.
  6. Besides actively looking for sponsors, it’s important for both participants and their sponsors to know that they are really making a difference to the lives of poor children! Explain clearly to your participants the challenges they should expect in the event, and the potential benefits they could bring to the poor. Participants can print out or forward the relevant details from Fundraising to their sponsors.
  7. Our donation box comes in two sizes:
    • Large: 30 cm (Length) x 22 cm (Width) x 20 cm (Height) (maximum 2 boxes per school and subject to availability)
    • Small: 17 cm (Length) x 12 cm (Width) x 18 cm (Height) (maximum 5 boxes per school and subject to availability)
    World Vision will contact you after receiving your donation box request.
  8. In order to minimise the administration costs and maximise the number of beneficiaries, World Vision encourages schools to submit donations through crossed cheque or direct bank-in. As many schools will borrow donation boxes from us, delivery and pick up service is subject to availability. Procedural details are as follows:
    1. Please complete and return the School Donation Form to World Vision at least 10 working days before your event.
    2. World Vision will contact you within 3 working days after receiving your application.
    3. The donation box(es) will be delivered to your school usually 1-2 days before the event. The school office or contact person should sign and stamp the Donation Box Receipt to confirm receipt of the donation box(es).
    4. Every donation box has a chain attached. Where necessary, secure the chain to a fixed object using your own padlock. (Please also refer to Q9)
    5. World Vision will collect the donation box(es) 1-2 working days after your event. Your school must sign and stamp the Donation Box Returned Slip to confirm the return of donation box(es).
    6. World Vision will then count the donations and send you a Receipt Acknowledgement within 3 weeks.
    7. An official receipt will be sent to you 6-8 weeks after donation collection.
  9. All donation boxes should be kept and stored securely. For details, please refer to the Storage and Security of Donation Box section in the Donation Box Booking Form.

  11. The official receipt(s) will be sent to you 6-8 weeks after World Vision receives your donations and the related documents.


Famine Day
  1. World Vision encourages all organisers to join and fast during the famine event with other participants to boost the morale. However, if you are not physically fit for it, don’t force it.
  2. If physically capable, participating students should abstain from solid food during the event. They should drink only water, fruit juice, milk or other light drinks. However, it also depends on the setting of your famine event.
