Keeping War-torn Communities Alive and Well

Abu Hashim, 66, is a loving father of eight children and six grandchildren who currently lives in a displacement camp in Northwest Syria.

“We had our own house once, our piece of land that produced a crop of olives from our olive trees. Our financial situation was good prior to the war in Syria and I had an office job,” he explained. “Then the war broke out. We wanted to get our children to safety, but we faced immense challenges trying to reach a displacement camp in the Northwest. There was no means of transportation.” The family had to march to an uncertain future. They reached a town in Northwest Syria and were able to secure a tiny house to live in.

As a displaced person, Abu Hashim lost his home, his land, and his family is out in the cold. He tried searching for a job but there were none in this town so they are dependent on humanitarian aid to get by. Just as the grandfather was trying to adapt to this dire situation and take care of his big family, the earthquake hit. The houses were wiped out by the quake. Abu Hashim’s grandchildren are traumatised and their education has been affected.

The earthquake didn’t only affect the education sector, it destroyed water networks and deprived people like Abu Hashim of much-needed services. Everyone is concerned about the spread of cholera. So, when he heard about the water provision project implemented by Uluslararasi Insani Yardimlaşma Derneği, World Vision’s partner, he felt relieved.

Thanks to the provision of water, the entire camp has come back to life. Abu Hashim says, “Now, we can use it for many things, including drinking, washing, cooking, everything! Securing water is not a financial burden anymore. Now I can spend the money I save on other important needs.”
