World Vision Hong Kong in Ethiopia (2021)

Tags:

Infamously known by some for its severe famine in the early 1980s, Ethiopia is actually one of the fastest growing economies of the world now, with an average annual growth of 9.5% over the last 15 years. Despite these advances in recent years, however, the country is still one of the poorest in the world, and many families have been facing the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic and climate change, as well as instability caused by the armed conflict in Tigray.

World Vision’s operations in Ethiopia began in the early 1970s and a national office was set up in Addis Ababa in 1975. In the aftermath of the great famine in the early 1980s, World Vision responded with various emergency response programmes, and later on developed a new integrated development approach which would become the prototype of the Area Programmes. World Vision Ethiopia now runs 50 Area Programmes across the country, with the aim of improving the well-being of the most vulnerable children and their families to ensure all children have the opportunity to thrive.

In 2021, World Vision Hong Kong contributed approximately HK$32.8 million to support 6 APs and 2 other projects in Ethiopia, benefiting about 1,170,300 people.
